Sutliff

William Edward Sutliff was b. 21 Dec 1875 to W.W. Sutliff (1831-d. ? in Quincy, Adams County, IL) and Jane G. Young (1831-1894) in Johnson County, Iowa. On 21 Jun 1899 he married his school sweetheart, Myrtle Louella Dubois, b. 17 May 1880 in Oxford Mills, Jones County, Iowa, the daughter of William (1818-1899) and Mary Morton (1861-1941).

When Myrtle’s father passed away in September of 1899, the young couple received a sizable inheritance and soon left for Manila, Crawford County, Iowa. They had nine children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. In 1918, the family was quarantined with Smallpox and during their time in quarantine, Myrtle gave birth to her last child. She passed away 29 May 1918 due to complications following birth and the Smallpox infection.

After Myrtle’s death, the children were separated and sent to live with various relatives. William Edward and their oldest son moved to Omaha, NE. On 21 Jul 1922, he married Viola Hardwick (1882-1932). However, the couple was soon living separate lives. On 1937, William passed away from a massive heart attack. He was buried in Manilla, Crawford County, Iowa with his wife Myrtle and two of their children who died in childhood.
