Bernard Schimmer was born on 20 Aug 1851 in Baden, Germany to Joseph and Mary Ann Gronemeyer. According to family lore, Joseph was killed by Gestapo and following his father’s death, Bernard left for America. Bernard ended up hopping aboard a train in Illinois that arrived in Sac City, IA where his sister was living with her husband.
On 26 Jun 1879, Bernard wed (Maria) Elizabeth Meier (b. 11 Apr 1861 in Cedar Rapids, Linn, IA), daughter of Joseph & Maria Magdalina (Becker) Meier. After living in the Odebolt, Sac, IA area for a handful of years, the family moved to a farm near Washta, Cherokee, IA before moving to Danbury, Woodbury, IA. In all, Bernard and Elizabeth had eleven children. Joseph: 1880-1919; Mary Ann: 1881-1971; Bernard: 1883-1960; Edward: 1886-1944; Henry Thomas: 1888-1964; Frank Paul: 1891-1949; John: 1892-1894; Elizabeth Gertrude: 1895-1971; Anne Lena: 1898-1992; William: 1901-1980; Andrew: 1907-1970.
Elizabeth died on 19 Mar 1919 at their home in Danbury after a prolonged illness.
Bernard married again and moved to Carroll, IA where he passed away on 28 Aug 1928. He was buried in the Danbury Cemetery with his first wife Elizabeth.
